6.  The overall length of the kingdom of Judah:  387, or 394?

a.  Are the kings of Judah to be counted as a linear sequence of 393½ years or are there overlaps, which give an ultimate total of 387 years?  (about 7 years difference are involved here)  2 Chronicles 1-36—see Bible timeline,

http://creation.com/images/pdfs/other/timeline_of_the_bible.pdf

for specific references—and 21:19-20, chapter 22, and 26:21.

b.  Ussher uses the following references in 1 and 2 Kings to show the relationships between the Northern and Southern Kingdoms.  His presuppositions are that there are no gaps in the southern kingdom, and that some modest overlaps are likely.

My view:

d.  Ussher’s modest overlaps seem to be driven more by the chronological alignments of the two kingdoms (as shown in the above references) than by any direct references to the overlaps, so the overlaps are implicit rather than explicit.  However, it seems reasonable that an outgoing king, if he were incapacitated by disease, etc., would probably put the succeeding king in place before he actually died.

e.  I think that Ussher’s view here is very plausible.  For simplicity I hold the Kingdom of Judah to 390 years and am willing to say that any amount of years from 387 to 394 is biblically defensible.  I think that an interregnum in Judah, to be justified, would have to be explicit.

f.  See the sidebar index, -10  Ussher’s gap, for a continuation of the Babylonian Captivity problem.
