The 480 years of 1 Kings 6:1

5b  The 450 years of Acts 13:17-22

a.  In the two views shown above, the contrast is so apparent that no one will fail to see the difference.  Both views take “the destruction of the 7 nations” as one end of their view, Ussher considering it the end of the 450 years and Anstey considering it the beginning.

b.  The verse that is used to identify this point is Deuteronomy 7:1 (also Joshua 3:10) which is prophetic in nature instead of historical, yet the history is evident that the seven nations were not destroyed overnight but, taking perhaps, up to 7 or 8 years, starting with the defeat of Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan who were Amorites .  See Deut. 2:26-3:11, and Numbers 21:21-35.

c.  These two Amorite kings were defeated by Moses before the end of the 40 years of wandering in the desert.  Perhaps it was during the 38th year, or two years before entering the Promised Land.  See Joshua 12:1-12.  It was certainly near the end of the 40 years.

d.  This takes care of some of the Amorites, but there are still 6½ nations to go.  The seven nations were the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and the Jebusites (Deut. 7:1, Josh. 3:10).  Joshua 11:3 and 12:8 mention the same nations except the Girgashites.  These remaining nations were defeated by Joshua during the years after entering the Promised Land. This is recorded as an historical fact in Joshua 24:11, but it is also recorded as an historical fact in Joshua 11:23, so the inference is that by the time of the first sabbatical, Leviticus 25:8-13, six years after entering the Promised Land, the destruction of the seven nations was complete.

e.  As I said in the previous section, Anstey tried to support his purely linear idea with another idea that holds that the 450 years of Acts 13:17-22 goes forward from the “destruction of the seven nations” to Samuel, when there is another well known translation that these 450 years go forward from the birth of Isaac to the “destruction of the seven nations.”  These two views are just opposite to each other (mirror images, so to speak) and Anstey is using a disputed text to support his already dubious subtraction view (or perhaps, it is the other way around?):

KJV, Acts 13:20  “And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four
hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.”

ESV, Acts 13:20  “All this took about 450 years.  And after that he gave them
                                 judges until Samuel the prophet."

f.  James Ussher, by the way, who lived in the era of the King James Version (KJV, 1611 AD), came down on the side of the English Standard Version (ESV, 2001 AD)!  See Annals paragraph 338.

g.  It is important that the reader understand that the support of Ussher at this point is very significant because the KJV (also the Reina-Valera Spanish translation) give the same idea that Anstey espouses, yet Ussher, who lived in the very same era as the translators of the KJV disagrees with the KJV translation for no apparent ulterior motive other than to better clarify a badly presented text.

h.  Furthermore, Anstey begins his overall argument for his interpretation of Acts 13:20 by beginning with verse 19, whereas I believe that the overall argument should begin
with verse 17, instead of 19, which may be summarized as follows:

v. 17, starting with “...our fathers” (which is a reference to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob),
and wherein the birth of Isaac seems to be a logical starting place = + 60,
          through Jacob entering Egypt = + 130,
          to the Exodus = + 215,

v. 18, through the wilderness = + 40,

v. 19, until “the destruction of the seven nations” = + 7

v. 20, which amounted to “about 450 years” i.e., 60 + 130 + 215 + 40 + 7 = 452 years,
after which he gave them judges until Samuel,

v. 21, followed by Saul,

v. 22, who was followed by David, etc.

i.  This is the reasonable approach of Ussher, and I have no problem agreeing with him since his view is so straightforward and understandable.
