5c The 300 years of Judges 11:26
a. In Judges 11:26 Jephthah sent messengers a second time to the king of Ammon with a long message, Judges 11:14-28. Near the end of this message Jephthah said that if the Ammonites really had a valid complaint about the Israelites having lived in Heshbon and its environs, Why then had not the Ammonites attempted to recover these cities during the last 300 years since Israel had defeated Sihon king of Heshbon?
b. From a chronological standpoint, the start of the 300 years was just before the Israelites entered into the Promised Land, perhaps up to two years before the end of the 40th year. Please see Numbers 21:21-35.
c. The end of the 300 years would naturally be sometime just before Jephthah was relaying this message, a likely ending point being anywhere up to 10 years before the time that Jephthah formally went to war with the sons of Ammon, Judges 11:29.
d. As we consider the two scenarios before us in the drawing above, we see that Anstey’s scenario falls 40 years short of the beginning of Jephthah’s formal 6-year judgship.
e. The other scenario comes within 7 years of Jephthah’s judgship and is a believable scenario. Anstey could have greatly improved his view by cutting Ehud’s 80 years to a more reasonable 40 years like the other three sets of 40.
f. However, if Anstey did this he would mess up his novel substraction theory so he has painted himself into a corner on this subject.
g. Some may argue that Ehud’s time really must be 80 years if Judges 3:30 is to be taken seriously. Perhaps. However, I think it can still be taken seriously by approaching it differently. That is, when the four 40-year rest periods are accumulated (as shown in the drawing by the notes, “First 40 = 40, Second 40 = 80, Third 40 = 120, and Fourth 40 = 160”) one can see how my proposed interpretation may seriously account for the 80-years of Ehud being merely the accumulated rest up to that point.
